Poliomyelitis (Polio)
Poliomyelitis is common referred to as Polio.
Polio is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease that has been around since the 1800s. The disease is transmitted through the ingestion of material that has been contaminated with fecal matter. Illness typically lasts less than two weeks.
When the disease is symptomatic, it can appear in three forms:
Abortive
- Mild form
- Most make a full recovery
Nonparalytic
- More severe
- Associated with aseptic meningitis
Paralytic
- Most severe form
- Virus that attacks the nerves that control the muscles of all four limbs and breathing
- May result in death
