Arthritis
Arthritis is a progressive condition that results from the inflammation of joints. If left untreated, arthritis can lead to joint immobility, muscle atrophy, and contractures.
The most common types of arthritis include:
Adult Rheumatoid
- Number one crippling disease
- Onset is typically between 25 and 50 years
- Affects more women
Juvenile Rheumatoid (also referred to as Still's Disease)
- Major crippling condition in children
- Onset is before 7 years
Osteoarthritis
- Second most common type
- Affects the hyaline cartilage in weight-bearing joints
- Results from destruction of cartilage due to repeated trauma or use
Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Affects the axial skeleton and large peripheral joints
- Most common in males with the onset between 20 and 40 years
- Common symptoms include back pain and early morning stiffness
