Hearing Impairment (HI) / Deafness
There are four types of hearing loss that can occur:
Conductive
- Caused by diseases or obstructions in the outer or middle ear
- Typically improved through the use of a hearing aid or surgery
Sensorineural
- Results from damage to the delicate sensory hair cells in the inner ear or to the related nerve
- Hearing loss ranges from mild to profound
Mixed
- Combination of conductive and sensorineural loss
- Affects the inner and/or outer sections of the inner ear
Central
- Results from damage or impairment to the nerves or nuclei of the Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Can occur in the pathways to the brain or within the brain
There are two main causes of hearing loss:
Acquired
- Loss occurred after birth
- Due to illness, injury, exposure to loud noise, build up of fluid, or childhood diseases
Congenital
- Loss or deafness was present at the time of birth
- Due to family history or infections or complications that occurred during pregnancy
