Intellectual Disability (ID)
Intellectual Disabilities involve difficulties or limitations in mental functioning and skills such as communication, personal care, and social skills. Individuals with ID develop slower than typically developing peers. Children with ID may take longer to learn and develop skills such as talking, walking, and completing personal care tasks as they grow.
There are four main causes if ID:
Genetic Conditions
- Caused by abnormal genes inherited from parents or errors when genes combine
- Examples: Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome
Problems During Pregnancy
- Causes incomplete prenatal growth
- Example: Fetal Alcohol syndrome
Problems at Birth
- Caused during labor or birth
- Example: decreased oxygen; umbilical cord around the neck
Health Problems
- Caused from diseases, extreme malnutrition, insufficient healthcare, or exposure to poisons
- Disease examples: Whooping cough, Measles, Mumps, or Meningitis
- Examples: Lead Poisoning
