Anemia
Anemia is a condition where an individual's blood has a lower amount of red blood cells in the body, or the red blood cells do not have enough hemoglobin. The hemoglobin carries oxygen within the blood cells to use throughout the body.
There are five types of Anemia:
Clorosis (also referred to as Iron Deficiency Anemia)
- Results from reduced hemoglobin
- Typically occurs in young women around puberty
Pernicious
- Results from reduced red blood cells
- Damages the nervous system
- Causes loss of sensation in the hands and feet
Aplastic
- Results from the replacement of red bone marrow with fatty bone marrow
- Caused by radiation, radioactive isotopes, atomic fallout, or certain antibiotics
Sickle Cell Anemia
- Hemoglobin is abnormal and the red blood cells become "C" shaped (referred to as sickle shaped)
- Causes red blood cells to have a difficult time passing through small blood vessels
- Causes pain all over
- Results in damaged organs
- Inherited; primarily affects individuals of African descents
Sports
- Affects athletes with low levels of red blood cells or hemoglobin
- Results from physical activity
- Effects are marginal
